HARROGATE, Tenn. — Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) and the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum (ALLM) shared the science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) behind the Civil War as a part of the Tennessee STEAM Festival on Oct. 19.

About 250 elementary school children from Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia visited the museum for hands-on activities demonstrating war wound medical care, archaeological findings of war relics, animal science applications and the impact of water contamination during the war.

The event involved faculty and students from LMU-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM), LMU-College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM), the School of Mathematics and Sciences and the Carter and Moyers School of Education, as well as ALLM historians and staff.

“This gives our students the opportunity to teach the information they are learning in coursework and relate it to something not considered science,” said Dr. LeRoy Brandt, associate professor of biology. “It’s an opportunity to see how humanities and sciences can work together.”

The second annual STEAM Festival featured over 150 opportunities across the state celebrating that science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics is in everything. The Tennessee STEAM Festival aspires to build interest and excitement in STEAM, and cultivate the next generation of citizen and professional science advocates and practitioners. The aim is to fill gaps in the existing workforce and inspire future workforce to seek careers in STEAM fields in Tennessee’s fast-growing and diversifying economy.

The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum is located on the historic campus of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee.
