Disability hearings for Kentuckians postponed until Jan. 7

SOMERSET, Ky. (AP) — The Social Security Administration says it will temporarily suspend hearings for hundreds of eastern Kentucky residents trying to keep disability benefits.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports the reprieve gives residents more time to receive files which could contain medical evidence establishing their eligibility for benefits.

The federal agency notified about 3,700 clients of former lawyer Eric Conn that they would have to defend their disability status in court after Conn pleaded guilty to bribing judges and doctors to approve disability checks for his clients.

Officials started hearing cases in August for about 1,900 people.

U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers said he expressed concern to the Social Security Administration about the hearings because many residents hadn’t received files that contained legal and medical information.

The hearings are set to resume on Jan. 7.

Sheriff: Woman fired gun over father watching Georgia game

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A sheriff’s office says a woman repeatedly shot a gun at her parents because her father wanted to keep watching the University of Georgia-Kentucky football game.

The Macon Telegraph reports 28-year-old Tambria Chaprii Palmer was arrested Saturday on charges including aggravated assault.

A Baldwin County sheriff’s Office report says Palmer changed the channel while her father, Darrell, was watching the game. It says the father turned off the television, blocking it from being turned back on.

The report says Palmer then said she would “send everyone in the house to hell,” loaded a gun and proceeded to empty the magazine as her parents scrambled for safety with their grandchildren.

It’s unclear if Palmer has a lawyer.

10 students injured in crash involving school bus

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — An official says a crash involving a Kentucky school bus sent 10 students to hospitals.

Jefferson County Public Schools spokeswoman Toni Konz-Tatman told The Courier-Journal that 18 high school students were on the bus Friday morning when it was hit from behind. She said 10 students complained of “minor injuries” including neck and back pain and were taken to local hospitals.

She said the remaining students were taken to Iroquois High School. The bus sustained minor damage.

No further information was immediately available.

Ky. hosting National Retriever Championship

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky is hosting the National Retriever Championship for dogs.

A statement from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources says it is the first time the state has hosted the event, which is the Super Bowl of competitive retrieving. The event begins Saturday at the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources’ West Kentucky Wildlife Management Area near Paducah and continues through Nov. 17, when the national champion will be crowned.

The National Retriever Club president Mitch Patterson said the site in western Kentucky was chosen because of the beautiful grounds, good relationships with local officials and infrastructure that will accommodate several hundred people.

Although thousands of retrievers compete in field trials each year, only about 100 qualify for the National Retriever Championship.
