There are all kinds of desserts. Cake, pie, candies, etc. That’s not to mention the variations of those desserts such as cupcakes and cakepops.

One such delicious delicacy, the circular confection known as the donut, it about to have its own special day. June 1 marks National Donut Day, a day to celebrate all things donuts.

According to nationaldaycalender.com, there is more to National Donut Day then just the love of glaze and filling. The day is also in honor of the Salvation Army Lassies, who were women who served donuts to soldiers during WWI.

The Salvation Army Donut was served by the Lassies, along with other foods, right on the front lines to the soldiers in Europe. This is said to have been a great boost in morale for the troops.

This was during WWI, mind. So how exactly were these donuts prepared on the frontlines? Apparently, they were cooked in oil using the helmets of American soldiers. This is where the term “doughboy” originated for American G.I.’s.

The actual National Donut Day was created in 1938 by the Salvation Army.

It’s easy to observe National Donut Day — just eat your favorite donut! Glazed? Powered? Sprinkles? Jelly? It doesn’t matter. All donuts are to be celebrated on June 1.

There are a handful of local donut shops to choose from as well if you don’t want to make the trek to the nearest Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts. In Middlesboro, there is King Donut II localed at 1849 North 25th Street and Sweet As Honey located on 119 Westmoreland Street across the tunnel in Harrogate.
