Christy Blevins with the Bell County Extension Office conducted a parent program for the Lone Jack FRYSC. The topic was how to plan meals. She instructed parents on how to buy enough food for the number of people they are planning to feed, so there isn’t a waste of food or money. She provided helpful ideas on how to adjust recipes to save money and also gave helpful hints about not buying name brands. Some generic brands work as well as the name brands. If one is over cooking, she talked about freezing the leftovers for another day’s meal; food is too expensive to be throwing it away. Blevins provided participants with a planner and marker to plan out weekly meals, so they know what they are going to the grocery to purchase for each meal of the week. She gave them Healthy Choices for Every Body booklets, including recipes. The guests enjoyed Sloppy Garden Joes, which was a healthy twist off of the original Sloppy Joes. They were fixed with mushrooms, tomatoes, barbecue sauce, onions, carrots, green peppers and ground turkey.
