The final day of Middlesboro’s trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina wasn’t as pleasurable as they would’ve hoped. After falling behind by four runs, the Jackets couldn’t find the momentum to overcome the deficit losing to Walsingham Academy, 4-1.

The loss wraps up Middlesboro’s journey through the Cal Ripken Experience with the Jackets finishing 2-2 on the week —defeating Whetstone and Carroll while losing to Hancock County and the Trojans.

The Jackets tallied six hits on the day but left eight runners on base throughout the game. Joshua Arnold paced the team at the plate going 2-for-3. Jacob Spurlock finished with a double — which set up courtesy runner Jeremiah Wilder to score a run.

Spurlock was credited with the loss on the mound after pitching the complete game. He allowed four hits and four runs while striking out seven batters.

Zach Stanko led Walsingham going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Tanner Schobel scored a team-high two runs while reaching base on a single and an error. Jacob Miller-Bopp and Zack Tomek also scored runs for the Trojans.

The two teams battled through the first two innings before Walsingham jumped on the board in the bottom half of the third. Tomek and Schobel scored after both reached on a single to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead.

After being walked, Miller-Bopp scored on a wild pitch to widen the margin to 3-0.

Middlesboro had a chance to put runs on the board in the fifth but couldn’t punch anyone across. Chris Callihan opened the inning with a single. Arnold followed with a single of his own. Both runners advanced on a fielder’s choice, but a strike out by Brad Short ended the inning with runners stranded on second and third.

The Trojans increased their lead to 4-0 when Schobel crossed the plate for a second time in the fifth.

The Jackets scored their only run in the sixth. With two outs, Branden Helton’s RBI scored Wilder to cut the final deficit to three runs.

Middlesboro (4-5) returns to action at 6 p.m. on Monday when they host South Laurel (2-3).
