To say the Middlesboro baseball team has had an enjoyable trip to Myrtle Beach would be an understatement. The Jackets racked up two more wins on Tuesday and Wednesday with only one hiccup so far in their journey through the Cal Ripken Experience.

A doubleheader on Tuesday saw Middlesboro split games with a win over Carroll, Ohio and a loss to Hancock County. On Wednesday, the team handed Edgemont, New York a lopsided 14-6 loss to continue their streak of success.

Game 1: Middlesboro 12, Carroll 4

Middlesboro picked up their second win of their trip on Tuesday with a 12-4 victory over Carroll out of Dayton, Ohio.

A good day at the plate helped boost the Jackets to victory. As a whole, the team tallied 10 hits during the game. Collier Elkins paced the team at the plate going 2-for-5 with two runs.

Lane Perry was consistent on the day finishing with two hits and an RBI. Jacob Mike went 2-for-3 with one run, while Chase Elliott led the team with three runs on one hit and two walks.

Tyler McCullough picked up the win on the mound allowing only four hits and one run through five innings. He also tallied seven strikeouts.

Carroll was paced by the runs of Martin O’Grady, Mitch Applegate, Tyler Boeke and Trent Randall. Matt McMahan finished with a hit and an RBI on the night.

It was a big fourth inning that sealed the game for the Jackets. Up 2-0 against the Patriots, Middlesboro reeled off five runs in the top half of the inning to give the Jackets a 7-0 lead.

Carroll answered in the fifth with a run by O’Grady to narrow the deficit to 7-1. A Jacob Spurlock run in the sixth increased the lead back to seven, but the Patriots responded with three more runs to cut the deficit to 8-4 heading into the final inning.

Middlesboro opened the seventh with a two-run RBI by McCullough that increased the lead to 10-4. He would later score to balloon the lead to 11-4 before Jared Davis crossed home plate to give the Jackets an eight-run victory.

Game 2: Hancock County 9, Middlesboro 3

The lone hiccup for the Jackets on Tuesday came against fellow Kentucky school Hancock County. After having a slow day at the plate, Middlesboro lost 9-3 to the Hornets.

The Jackets were only able to tally four hits on the day. Both Collier Elkins and Jacob Mike ended the day with two hits and an RBI. Tyler McCullough, Brad Short and Jeremiah Wilder scored runs for Middlesboro.

Mike was credited with the loss on the mound. Through 6 1/3 innings, he allowed eight runs and six hits.

Jacob and Cameron White paced the Hornets at the plate. The two players mirrored each other going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs apiece.

Middlesboro kept it close through the majority of the game. After falling behind 2-0 in the second, the Jackets found the scoreboard in the third when Short scored on the Elkins RBI to cut the lead to 2-1.

Middlesboro took a 3-2 lead in the fifth as Wilder and McCullough crossed home plate.

The game took a turn in the top half of the sixth inning. Hancock County rattled off seven runs to claim a six-run lead over the Jackets. Middlesboro couldn’t recover and lost the game.

Middlesboro (4-4) wrapped up their trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina against Walsingham Academy on Thursday. They return to action at 6 p.m. on Monday as they host South Laurel (1-3).
