Pineville’s stint in the 13th Region All A Classic was cut short on Monday when the Mountain Lions traveled to Williamsburg. Pineville couldn’t get the bats going quick enough and failed to cut into the Yellow Jacket lead as Williamsburg defeated the Lions 12-2 in five innings.

It wasn’t until the third inning that Pineville began finding their stride, but by that point they had already allowed seven runs.

“You can’t come out and play teams like this, especially Williamsburg, and not be ready to play in the first inning,” said Pineville coach Chris Murphy. “We didn’t settle down until about the third inning. Our pitcher was a little inconsistent in the first couple of innings. He settled down.

“Once they settled down, they started playing. If we can get that down, there is a couple of little things we still got to fix with our pitching (and some) infield adjustments. I think we’re making strides.”

Pineville finished the game with four hits with Cody Goodin’s two-run home run in the fourth leading the way. Jonathan Simpson, Deon Coffman and Reed Baker each tallied hits as well.

Simpson was credited with the loss on the mound after allowing nine hits and 10 runs in three innings of work. Josh Holland saw time on the mound as well.

For Williamsburg, it was the combination of Hunter Brown and Trey Hendrix that paced the Jackets. Brown finished the night with three doubles and three runs. Hendrix tallied two hits and three RBIs.

Noah Perkins earned the victory on the mound allowing four hits and two runs in 3 1/3 innings.

After trailing 7-0 after three innings, Pineville started putting runs on the board in the fourth. Holland was walked to start the inning. After Reese Capps was thrown out at first, Goodin smacked a home run of the right-center fence to cut the lead to 7-2.

The home run sparked a pitching change with Clay Kysar coming in for relief. He struck out Coffman before Baker hit a single to right field. Dylan Morris was thrown out at first to end the top half of the inning with the Lions trailing by five runs.

Pineville’s surge wouldn’t last long with Williamsburg scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning to increase their lead to eight, 10-2, before the final out was thrown.

After a quick at-bat for the Lions, a two-run double by Hendrix ended the game with the Jackets walking away with a 10-run victory.

Pineville (1-3) is slated to host Jellico, Tennessee at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Williamsburg (3-2) advances to the second round of the 13th Region All A Classic. They will battle Harlan in the next round of the tournament.
