Middlesboro, Bell eliminated in semifinals of regional tourney

WILLIAMSBURG — The Whitley County Lady Colonels avenged an earlier loss to Middlesboro during the regular season Tuesday night with an 8-2 victory in the semifinals of the 13th Region Girls Soccer Tournament.
Led by a six-goal performance from Autumn Sawyers, Whitley County secured its first-ever appearance in the regional championship game, where it will face North Laurel on Thursday at 6 p.m.
North Laurel defeated Bell County, 8-0, in the other semifinal Tuesday.
Middlesboro (12-4) got on the scoreboard during the 37th minute to cut the Lady Colonels’ lead to, 3-1. Whitley County led, 4-1 at halftime.
The Lady Jackets scored their lone other goal during the 52nd minute to cut the deficit to 6-2 before Sawyers tacked on her final two goals during the final 13 minutes of the match.
Goalkeeper Kiley Cupp was credited with 16 saves for the Lady Bobcats, who finished their season with a 5-8 record.
