Lady Lions down Barbourville

In what was a slow shooting night for both teams, Pineville utilized a big second quarter to earn a 46-30 victory over Barbourville on Friday. The win gives the Lady Lions a 2-1 district record.
Up by only four points, Pineville used a 19-point second quarter to pull away by double digits. The Lady Lions never trailed during the game.
Pineville shot only 25.8 percent from the field on the night while shooting at a 33.3 percent clip from long range. The shot 71.4 percent for the free-throw line.
Whitney Caldwell finished tying for a game-high 15 points while shooting a team-best 46.2 percent from the field. She also tallied six rebounds and a block.
Raigan King chipped in 13 points while connecting of 5-of-6 free throws. Makenzie Fuson was two points shy of another double-double scoring eight points to go along with her 10 rebounds.
“We took good shots, good looks. I told them to just keep firing away. You can’t complain with they (were taking good shots). We were taking good shots, they just weren’t going in,” said Pineville coach Jamie Mills. “We just kept encouraging them to keep shooting. Overall, I was pleased at how we played.”
On a night where she was recognized for her 1,000th rebound, Jill Enix put on a showcase in the rebounding department. She finished with a game-high 20 rebounds. She also grabbed a team-high five steals and four assists. She ended the night with eight points.
“There’s the sign of a great player. The shot isn’t going, but they do other things to help the team win,” said Mills about Enix. “That’s what you’ve got to do. If the shot isn’t going, fine. Just do something else to be a leader. She found a way to be a leader without having to score points.”
Anna Daniels was the backbone for Barbourville scoring 15 points while hitting five baskets from the field and going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Abba Smith chipped in eight points with six coming from the free-throw line.
Pineville jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first with five points coming from Enix. Daniels ended the run with a layup to narrow the deficit to four. A pair of free throws from Smith cut the lead to 6-4 with 1:53 remaining in the opening period.
Caldwell ended the quarter with a floater at the buzzer to to give the Lady Lions an 8-4 lead at the end of one.
Pineville picked things up in the second to help pull away. Daniels hit a 3-pointer following a Fuson free throw to bring the Lady Tigers within two, 9-7. A 3-pointer by Combs and a jumper from Enix increased the Lady Lion lead to 14-7.
A 3-pointer by Grace Jones cut the deficit to four and forced Pineville to take a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Lady Lions went on a 9-2 run that gave Pineville a 23-12 lead with just over a minute to go in the half. The run was capped off by an old-fashion three-point play by Caldwell.
Pineville ended the quarter with consecutive baskets from Enix and Caldwell to give them a 27-12 lead heading into the half.
The Lady Lions outscored Barbourville 19-18 in the second half to secure a 16-point victory.

Pineville (14-4) will host Corbin (6-13) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Barbourville (6-11) squared off against Berea (7-11) on Monday.
