Lynn Camp eliminates Pineville

Pineville would not back down from Lynn Camp on Monday in the opening round of the 13th Region All A Classic. The defending champions fought off a barrage of 3-pointers in the second quarter and erased a double-digit deficit in the fourth to stay within reaching distance.

In the end, the Wildcats were too much as Tanner Boggs and Lynn Camp pulled away to a 62-51 win. With the loss, Pineville — who earned their second consecutive 13th Region All A title last year — was ousted from the tournament.

“Lynn Camp in the second quarter, that barrage of threes they hit was really a downer for us,” said Pineville coach JD Strange. ” I give our kids credit. We fought our butts off, and I was real proud of our effort. We even had a shot late if we come up and make some plays.

“Our kids played extremely hard. I’m real proud of that fact. It’s disappointing to lose the game, but at the same time I still feel like…we’re getting better. I think you see our effort. As long as our effort is there and our kids are working hard, we’ll get better. We’re just going through some growing pains right now.”

Boggs was the clear leader for Lynn Camp during the game. The senior guard finished with a game-high 28 points with 14 coming in the fourth quarter. He also went a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe.

Max Burd added 11 points to the scoreboard and was the only other Wildcat to score in double digits.

For Pineville, Josh Lawson found his stroke nailing eight baskets from the field on his way to a team-high 21 points. The senior also went 4-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Ben Goodin chipped in 10 points. Clay Goodin added six points to the final tally.

With 3:40 remaining in the first half, Lawson nailed a pair of free throws to cut the Lynn Camp lead to two, 20-18.

The Wildcats stormed back with a flurry of 3-pointers that helped the team go on a 15-4 run to end the second. Jacob Belew, Boggs and Scott Overbay got things started with three 3-pointers to increase the Lynn Camp lead to 29-18.

A layup from Lawson stopped the bleeding temporarily before Overbay hit another 3-pointer to widen the margin to 32-20. Lawson responded with another layup moments before Burd hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Lynn Camp a 35-22 lead heading into the half.

Pineville and Lynn Camp opened the third trading baskets before the Wildcats hit a pair of free throws and a basket to grab a 41-26 lead.

The Lions ended the quarter with a pair of free throws from Braxton Caldwell and a putback from Goodin to cut the lead to 46-35 heading into the final period.

Lynn Camp led by as much as 16 in the fourth with 3:51 remaining. Pineville made one last push down the stretch. An old-fashion three-point play by Lawson narrowed the deficit to 54-41.

Reed Baker hit a pair of free throws with 2:53 left to go to cut the lead to 54-43. Lawson narrowed the deficit to single digits, 54-45, with a layup and forced Lynn Camp to call a timeout.

Boggs converted the and-1 to put the Wildcats ahead by double digits again, but Caldwell and Baker hit consecutive 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 57-51 forcing Lynn Camp to call another timeout.

That was as close as Pineville would come with Boggs closing out the game with the and-1 and a pair of free throws to give the Wildcats an 11-point victory.
