KMLF could be facing postponement due to COVID-19

The 2020 Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival could be facing postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Schools have closed their doors and are extending the closures due to the continued spread of the virus throughout the community. 

This week there have been positive cases that were confirmed in both Kentucky and Tennessee, as close as Claiborne County. 

Sporting events have been cancelled for the rest of their season, which includes the Kentucky Derby. So, what do these closures mean for the beloved KMLF? 

The Kentucky Mountain Laurel is one of Kentucky’s oldest festivals dating back to its start in 1931. That year, the festival was established by Annie Walker Burns as a way to honor her famous ancestor, Dr. Thomas Walker. Since its inception, the continued devotion of so many has kept the festival tradition alive and is celebrating its 90th season.  

According to The Big 106.3 WRIL, Colby Slusher, this year’s festival chairman has been in regular contact with the board and is currently reviewing the COVID-19 pandemic daily. 

The festival brings together visitors from across the southeast to take part in the parade, a 5K, and the princess and queen’s crowning. 

Every option is being evaluated and a decision will be made in the upcoming weeks on whether the festival will be postponed or cancelled for the 2020 season. 

All KMLF events are family-oriented and many are free and open to the public and those that do require tickets can be purchased at the entrance of the event.
