The resurfacing and patching repairs to be made to 72 county roads in Bell County is expected to be completed in spring 2020.

On Thursday, the Commissioner of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Gray Tomblyn II visited Judge-Executive Albey Brock’s office to make the announcement.

“Governor Bevin has approved the amount of $582,000 for Bell County in discretionary funding for road projects,” Tomblyn explained. “Discretionary funding is allocated by the legislature to the Transportation Cabinet and then it gives the Governor the flexibility to disseminate projects through the Commonwealth.”

Resurfacing repairs address existing surface cracks, potholes, raveling and base failures.

“Obviously the opportunity to put down this amount of black top at one time, it doesn’t come along often,” Judge Brock said. “Most of all of these roads will be done this spring.”

Brock met with contractors on Friday to open bids for these roads.

“They are all in agreement that with the weather conditions and the temperature that it is better to have warmer temperatures for the surfaces of the roads prior to resurfacing,” he said.

He explained that the new pavement will stick to the road better.

“We want to get the most out of this so we are going to put it off until the spring to do this,” said Brock. “With a couple of other funds that we have, it could be safe to say that the county will spend close to $1 million or more in the year of 2020 resurfacing roads,” he continued.

Brock said that over the course of the last 10 years they have strived to get their roads in better condition than any county that neighbors Bell.

“I think that I can say that without fear of contradiction that Bell County’s county roads are in better shape than any county that touches us,” he said.

The amount of resurfacing work that will be done will come from the combining of other monies put together.

“When we are able to put this money together in big chunks, it gets us more bang for the buck,” Brock explained. “We get more done with less money because the contractors are more competitive.”
