Authorities in the tri-state area are searching for a man who escaped custody Monday morning.

James Lumpkin, 19, of Harrogate, Tenn., is being sought by authorities for an active warrant and charges of first-degree wanton endangerment (police officer).

Monday morning, Middlesboro police officers responded to a call of a possible assault on Birch Lane. Lt. David Buis was the first officer to arrive on scene and located the vehicle in question and detained three suspects.

During a warrant check through Middlesboro Dispatch, the active warrant on Lumpkin was discovered.

Officer Jeremiah Johnson arrived to assist Buis and handcuffed Lumpkin. While being placed in the back of the cruiser, Lumpkin fled the scene escaping custody. Lumpkin ran further down Polly Hollow into the woods and is still being sought after.

Lumpkin is considered dangerous, and this is the second time this year alone facing wanton endangerment charges. Other charges are expected.

He is described by authorities as standing 5-10, 145 pounds, African American male with short brown hair, brown eyes and a slim build. According to Officer Johnson, any person caught harboring Lumpkin will face charges.

Authorities are advising the public to not approach him but call 911 immediately or the Middlesboro Police Department at 606-248-3636.
