Middlesboro High School officials have announced that Ashley Russell is the new head coach of the Middlesboro volleyball team. With a decorated playing career and a track record of leadership, Russell brings a wealth of experience, passion, and a winning mindset to the program, according to a press release from the school.
Born and raised in Clearwater, Fla., Russell played competitive volleyball both indoors and on the beach throughout her youth, highlighted by earning a silver medal in beach volleyball at the 2007 Junior Olympics. She continued her athletic career at the collegiate level, playing both volleyball and softball for Lincoln Memorial University after moving to the tri-state area for college.
Beyond the court, Russell has been recognized for her leadership and impact, most recently being honored as one of the Top 50 Women Leaders of Tennessee for 2024 by Women We Admire. Her professional background includes a pivotal role in establishing the LMU-College of Veterinary Medicine, where she helped shape the development, operations, and accreditation of the 30th veterinary college in the U.S. In 2021, she joined veterinary startup Petfolk, where she leads the People team and plays a key role in scaling teams and locations.
Known for her ability to build high-performing teams and foster a culture of encouragement and excellence, Russell is eager to bring that same energy and commitment to the Middlesboro volleyball program.
“Middlesboro Athletics has a long-standing legacy of excellence, and our goal is to elevate volleyball as part of that championship tradition,” said Russell. “I’m excited to build upon the foundation laid by the coaches before me and continue developing a program that instills confidence, discipline, and a love for the game in our student-athletes.”
Russell now calls East Tennessee home, where she lives with her husband Justin, bonus daughter Lilah, and son Barrett. Her two dogs, Zulu and Jaafaa, along with her cat, Whiskey, make their house feel like a home.
Middlesboro High School is thrilled to welcome coach Russell to the Yellow Jackets family and looks forward to an exciting future for the volleyball program under her leadership.
