Smith tosses shutout as Harlan opens district slate with win

- Photo by Kim Henson Bell County center fielder Addison Maiden had both hits for the Lady Cats on Tuesday during the district loss at Harlan.
Harlan raced to a 6-0 lead over the first two innings on the way to a 10-0 six-inning Tuesday over visiting Bell County in the district opener for both squads.
Ella Lisenbee and Addison Campbell led the Lady Dragons with two hits each. Ella Farley scored three runs from the leadoff spot with a triple and walk. Addison Jackson added a single.
Jordyn Smith threw a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks to earn the win.
Addison Maiden had both hits for Bell County.
Adyson Scott pitched five innings, giving up nine runs (three earned) on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Laryssa Matthews gave up one run on one hit with one strikeout in one-third of an inning.
Bell County (1-2) travels to Harlan County on Thursday.

Despite suffering two losses against good teams to start the 2025 season, Harlan County sophomore left-hander Alexis Adams had been good in both outings.
She went from good to unhittable Thursday in her third outing of the season, tossing a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts and one walk as the Lady Bears blanked visiting Bell County 7-0 in their district opener.
Madison Blair led the HCHS offense with three hits in four at bats. Braylen Gilley added a double. D’Anna Cook, Halanah Shepherd, Jade Burton and Aly Sherman contributed one hit each. Burton drove in two runs while Gilley scored two.
“I was very happy to see Lexi come in tonight with a shut out performance against Bell,” Harlan County coach Shelby Burton said. “Lexi has shown a lot of growth and maturity to start this season. She was given two big pitching assignments to start the year against South Laurel and Rockcastle. She stepped up to the challenge.”
The 3-2 Lady Bears play host to Whitley County on Friday. The 1-3 Lady Cats play at Powell County on Friday.

The Lady Cats opened the season with an 18-1 rout of Owsley County.
Jayda Boateng drove in four runs on two hits to lead the Bell offense. Kenley Foster also had two hits. Alexus Lawson and Adyson Scott each added a hit and three RBI.
Laryssa Matthew pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk to earn the win.
The Lady Cats fell 7-6 to Barbourville in their second game.
Scott led Bell with a double and single. Foster and Addison Maiden added two singles each. Lawson and Boateng each had a double. Tristan Saylor, Reagan Moyers and Matthews added one single each.
Scott pitched four innings, giving up six runs (one earned) on five hits in four innings, with eight strikeouts and three walks. Matthews allowed one run on one hit in two innings with three strikeouts and two walks.
