Bill Johnson has resigned as a member of the Middlesboro Independent Board of Education. He served 22 years as a board member, including 16 as the board’s chairman.
The Board of Education and Superintendent Waylon Allen released a statement honoring Johnson for his legacy of leadership and service on Monday.
“As Bill Johnson steps down from his role on the Middlesboro Independent School Board, we take a moment to reflect on his remarkable contributions and unwavering dedication to our schools, students, and community,” the release said. “Mr. Johnson has been a steadfast advocate for education, championing initiatives that have shaped the future of our district. His commitment to ensuring that every child has access to quality education has been evident in every decision, every meeting, and every conversation.”
Under Johnson’s leadership, the school board has passed critical policies, initiated several facility upgrades, advocated for teacher resources and support, and fostered new innovative approaches in education. Some of the most profound milestones accomplished under his leadership include establishing the first soccer field, exterior upgrades to all schools, and aligning the curriculum by ensuring students have access to high-quality instructional resources from kindergarten through grade 12.
Beyond his professional achievements, Johnson has been a role model in integrity, compassion, and dedication. A Middlesboro alumni, active member of First Baptist Church, ROHO member, and owner of Sharp’s Cleaners & Uniform Rentals, Johnson’s roots grow deep for the Middlesboro community.
“I am deeply honored to reflect on my time serving as a board member of Middlesboro Independent Schools. I have enjoyed working with all past and current school board members, as well as a total of four superintendents,” Johnson said. “I remain grateful for the opportunities to contribute to the success of our district, and I am excited about the future of Middlesboro Schools.”
Allen and the other board members thanked Johnson for his “services, vision and heart.”
“As Mr. Johnson transitions into this new chapter, we extend our deepest gratitude for his tireless efforts and the countless hours he’s devoted to making our district stronger. While his presence on the board will be missed, his influence will continue to guide us for years to come,” their statement said. “We wish you all the best in retirement, filled with well-deserved rest, joy, and new adventures.”
The next meeting of the Middlesboro Independent School Board will be Jan. 21 at 5 p.m. at the Middlesboro High School Library.
