The Middlesboro Yellow Jackets broke out of a four-game losing streak by exploding for 16 3-pointers in an 83-46 win Thursday at Lynn Camp as part of the Wildcat Classic.
Freshman guard Jacob Tinnel hit four 3s and finished with a team-high 23 points. Bryson Brooks added five 3s with 17 points. Joseph Killion added three 3s with 15 points. Aiden Larew chipped in with 10 points.
Conner Mabe led the 1-7 Wildcats with 13 points. Ethan Chafin and Caleb Wilburn added 11 points each.
Middlesboro took a 16-7 lead after one quarter as Larew and Tinnel each had two baskets. Tinnel took over in the second period with 16 of 23 points as the lead grew to 39-19 by halftime.
The Jackets added four more 3s in the third quarter and pushed the lead to 61-28. The Jackets hit six 3s in the fourth quarter, starting a running clock midway through the period.
“I was very pleased with our ability to make the right open pass for an open shot. Eleven of the 15 3s we hit came off of an assist,” Middlesboro coach John Wheat said. “ I was happy for Jacob Tinnel tonight. He has been pressing too hard on trying to make a play. His confidence started to take off Saturday against Berea and it carried over tonight. Aiden Larew had a tremendous night in all facets of the game. He ended the night with 10 points and 12 rebounds. I had been challenging Aiden to be more of a threat on the floor and be physical.”
Middlesboro (2-4) will play Williamsburg on Friday in the Wildcat Classic.
