Before the ribbon cutting, Jennifer Amburgy presented a $500 check to Coach Jones, Coach Gilly and the PHS football team.

The renovations at Gem City Cakes included a new area that Amburgy calls a selfie station.

Gem City Cakes held a grand re-opening last weekend after an extensive remodeling that was made possible through a $10,000 American Express Backing Small Business grant.

“All of the paint outside is new, we got new lighting in our display window, we got a new bar, a TV and all of our tables and chairs are new,” owner Jennifer Amburgy said. “The mural on one wall is new and we’ve got an all new area that I call our ‘selfie station.’ Pretty much everything you see is new and it looks good from the outside, when you drive by it stands out.”

Gem City also made a $500 donation to the Pineville Mountain Lion football team on Saturday and earlier provided free food for a Cupcakes and Comedy event at the Bell Theater. Amburgy said part of the grant had to be used to put on a free event for the community.

“I had a little bit of money left over so I figured why not give it to the football team,” she said. “They can use it for equipment or whatever they need to.”
