Strong storms that passed through the area Wednesday afternoon caused localized flooding in several areas of Bell County and a downed tree closed the restrooms at Bartlett Park at the Cumberland Gap National Park.
Bell County Emergency Management shared that there were reports of water across the roadway at Page School and the Calvin Post Office on Highway 119, Varilla Curge and on Highway 987 heading into Brownies Creek.
Water also covered part of Highway 66 in Arjay at Wieser Branch. The National Weather Service in Jackson issued flash flood warnings Wednesday afternoon after over 2 inches of rain fell in part of eastern Kentucky.
The National Park Service posted that the restrooms at Bartlett Park will be closed until further notice after a large tree fell on the building’s roof during Wednesday’s storms.
“Removal of the tree will have to be done carefully and will take some time, and then damage to the building will have to be repaired before it can be reopened,” the park posted on its Facebook page. “We apologize for the inconvenience.”
