Superintendent Waylon Allen will be retiring, effective January 31, 2025, the Middlesboro Independent School District Board of Education announced in a press release sent out Tuesday evening.
Allen has served as superintendent since 2017, overseeing significant developments and initiatives within the district. He began with the district in 2005, coming from Harlan County, and has held several key positions including Assistant Principal at MHS, Director of Transportation, Director of Pupil Personnel, and Assistant Superintendent before assuming his current role.
“We are deeply grateful for the time Superintendent Allen has devoted to the Middlesboro Independent School District. His tireless efforts have ensured that our students receive the best educational experience possible, and that our faculty and staff have an optimal working environment. His leadership and dedication have made a significant impact on our community,” Board Chair Teresa Brown said on behalf of the board.
Allen said it has been an honor to serve the Middlesboro community over the last seven years.
“I am grateful to the Middlesboro community for the privilege to serve as superintendent. It has been an honor to work alongside dedicated educators, staff, students, and parents over these years,” he said. “As I embark on this new chapter of my life, I do so with confidence in the bright future that lies ahead for our district. I am certain that the dedicated individuals within this community will continue to strive for excellence and uphold the values that make Middlesboro Independent Schools exceptional. I am thankful to the Board for always putting the students of MISD first in every decision they make and for affording me the opportunity to serve these past 7 years.”
The Board of Education will commence a search for an interim superintendent later this year, with the goal of appointing someone to begin on February 1, 2025. Further information regarding the search process will be provided at a later date.
