Over 100 elementary and middle school kids came out for the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets Football Camp that was held on Thursday evening and Friday morning on the turf at Bradner Stadium.
The MHS players and coaches divided the campers up into age groups and put them through various drills.
“We had great numbers, the kids seemed to have a great time and they learned a little bit of fundamentals,” Yellow Jacket head coach Larry French said. “We got to watch them and got a look at their agility and their speed — they’re a lot of future football stars coming up in the lower grades. Hopefully they turn out to be high school players for us.”
Each camper received a T-shirt and a youth football. Friday’s drills wrapped up with a tug–of-war competition and 2024 MHS graduate quarterback Cayden Grigsby, who will be playing at Carson Newman this fall, spoke briefly to the campers before the footballs were handed out.
“It’s fun to do, it’s a hot time of the year to be doing camp, but we had good numbers and everybody had a great time, even the coaches had a great time,” French said. “We thank our sponsors for putting on a free football camp. Blake Bowling sponsored the T-shirts for us and the booster club picked up the footballs, without those people we couldn’t put on a free camp. Our hats are off to those people. We enjoy doing this every year and the turnout has been better each year that we’ve done this. Hopefully next year will turn out even bigger.”
