A Bell County man was arrested on Monday after fleeing from deputies and jumping into the Cumberland River.

Justin Dye, 38, of Calvin, was lodged in the Bell County Detention Center on charges of fleeing or evading police – 2nd degree (on foot) and – 2nd degree (motor vehicle), theft by unlawful taking/shoplifting, failure to appear, and was also served a parole violation warrant.

According to a report from WRIL, Deputy Sgt. Frank Foster had just cleared a call on Highway 119 and passed a vehicle with a driver, later identified as Dye, known to have active warrants. Foster turned and attempted a traffic stop.

Dye fled from the sergeant and turned onto Old Bell High Road. After stopping the vehicle, he exited and fled running down an embankment into the Cumberland River. At that time the Bell County Rescue Squad was paged out for a water rescue.

A short time later, Dye made his way across the river and up the other embankment, still trying to flee. Chief Deputy Jared Smith was waiting for him on that side, who took Dye into custody.

Earlier Monday morning the Family Dollar on Highway 119 had called into Bell Dispatch and reported a male, matching Dye’s description and the vehicle he was driving, had stolen items from the store.
