Lady Lions sweep Chain Rock Classic

The Pineville Lady Lions continued winning in the girls portion of the tournament, capturing the Chain Rock Classic title with a 74-47 shellacking of Providence Academy.

Nadine Johnson poured in 26 points for the 10-1 Lady Lions. Rachel Howard had 18 points, and Ava Arnett added 16.

Aerin Hicks scored 20 points for Providence.

Arnett and Howard were named to the all-tournament team.

The Lady Lions beat Claiborne 58-36 in Game 1 behind Johnson’s 20 points. Arnett scored 22 points and Johnson added 15 in Pineville’s 58-43 win over Harlan County in its second game.

Johnson was named the tournament’s MVP.

Mountain Lions capture Chain Rock title

The Pineville Mountain Lions have by any standard played a competitive schedule to date across the Southeast in hopes that the experience leads to a championship run in Class A and their district and region.

So, it goes without saying that playing at home this past week has been a welcome experience for the squad. Winning their tournament is the icing on the cake.

The Lions ran their record to 8-4 on the season and won the Chain Rock Classic Saturday night with a hard-fought 84-73 victory over 14th Region foe Powell County.

Pineville was led by their high-scoring duo of junior guards Sawyer Thompson and Ashton Moser. Moser poured in 28 points and Thompson added 25 to pace the Lions. Seniors Wyatt Caldwell and Sam Caldwell also came up huge in the winning effort, scoring 17 and 12 points, respectively.

The Pirates’ Brayden Brandenburg led all scorers with 35 points.

Thompson led Pineville with 33 points in their Game 1 win over Trimble County, 81-66. Thompson had 30 points and Moser chipped in 21 in a 85-70 win over Somerset Christian in their second game.

Moser, Wyatt Caldwell, Robbins, Sam Caldwell and Zander Garrison were selected to the all-tournament team. Thompson garnered MVP honors.
