Local golfer and Pineville native Braxton Caldwell verbally committed to play golf for Morehead State University on Friday. Caldwell has had a multitude of great victories in golf, most recently, being the KMLF Golf Classic Champion during the Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival.

“It’s a dream come true to play golf, especially at the division one level,” said Caldwell. “I loved everything about Morehead State. It’s not too far away, I loved the facilities, I loved the coaches and I loved the atmosphere around the campus. I had a few more offers from places like LMU and Union, but I just felt at home at Morehead. I’ve worked very hard to get to where I am today, and it feels good to say that I have committed to play for Morehead.

“I’ve been putting in as much work as I could possibly get. Sometimes I’m out there from dawn until dusk, making sure I take advantage of every opportunity that I have. The Ohio Valley Conference has some really good golfers in it, and I’m excited to compete against them.”

The one thing that compels Caldwell to succeed in golf is that one’s skill determines how well they perform on the course.

“The thing about golf is that you’re the one in control of your own destiny,” said Caldwell. “How well you perform rests on your shoulders. I make sure to get as much extra work in as I can because I want to be as good as I can be. I’m going to continue to work as hard as I can for as long as I can. Again, I just feel beyond thankful and blessed for the opportunity to play the game I love at a higher level.”

This past year, Morehead State fashioned the program’s best aggregate team score since 1997 in the Ohio Valley Golf Championships. The team finished with the lowest score relative to par (over 7) at the OVC Championships during head coach Matthew Martin’s tenure at the school. They finished eighth at the event.
