This Sunday, it’s all about mom. Spend this Sunday thinking about mom. Whether you pick up the phone to share a conversation together or you spend the day celebrating her, this Sunday all about her.
Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May and is not considered a federal holiday, but the day is widely celebrated as a special day set aside to honor all mothers and motherhood.
The observance of Mother’s Day mainly came through the efforts of a devoted daughter, Anna M. Jarvis. Although the day has ancient roots, Jarvis is recognized for setting aside the special day.
After the death of her own mother in 1905, Jarvis wanted to recognize the sacrifices mothers made for their children. She organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration in May 1908 at a Methodist church in Grafton, W. Va.
On May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May Mother’s Day, and within a few years, the idea gained worldwide prominence.
If you are looking for ways to celebrate your mother here are some ideas:
• Bring her some flowers: Jarvis always envisioned that all mothers wear white carnations on Mother’s Day;
• Purpose irises are also a special choice for symbolizing faith and hope: Pick flowers that have their own special meaning for your mother;
• Give your mom a live plant: Consider giving her a new plant to begin a collection such as a rose bush, geranium, or orchids. You could also consider a dogwood tree or a flowering shrub;
• Design and plant her a garden: Give her the gift of a small garden and buy the plants and also plant them together. If your mother enjoys cooking, perhaps she’d love an herb garden outside her kitchen window;
• Bring mom breakfast in bed: Pancakes, waffles, or French toast are always a good choice. Wake her up with a delicious homemade breakfast or pick something up at the local bakery start her day off just right, and don’t forget the coffee;
• Cook mom a special dinner: What is your mom’s favorite food? Think about her favorite and start from there. Create a menu centered on her favorite food and make an evening of it;
• Bake a cake: It is traditional in England that children always bake a cake for their mothers on what is called Mothering Sunday. If you like this tradition, choose your mother’s favorite cake and bake it for her or bake it together and begin a tradition of your very own;
• Make a homemade gift: Mothers love gifts from the heart. You can make mom a lavender sachet, some rose potpourri, gift jars, a Mother’s Day basket, anything that says Happy Mother’s Day;
• Give your mother a locket of your photos: What could be more special to mom than to receive a locket with photos of her children to carry with her daily? She’ll treasure it forever;
• Give your mother jewelry with your birthstone: Birthstone earrings, necklace, or even a ring to always make her think of you when she wears them;
• Make your mother a homemade Mother’s Day card: Put your creative juices to work and make your mom a sweet, silly, or sappy Mother’s Day card that is personalized from your heart. If you don’t know what to write in the card, you can share a funny story or happy memory of you and your mom. It will make her smile.
