Repair Affair slated for Saturday

Bell County Repair Affair is slated for Saturday and households that were chosen for assistance are prepared for the volunteers’ arrival.
“We took applications early in spring,” Bell County Repair Affair Coordinator Brian Good said. “We did not take any applications for wheelchair ramps, as we have several that have been applied up to this point.”
Repair Affair was created by the Bell-Whitley Community Action Agency and several businesses in Bell County and is a means to offer much needed home repairs and landscape work.
“Our goal is to help as many people as we can on a limited budget.” Good explained. “We are not funded by any government entity or any grants, so we rely solely on donations and volunteers. We try to make those dollars stretch as far as possible so we can assist more people. Another one of our main goals is to do as many wheelchair ramps that we can.”
This year will mark the 22nd year for Repair Affair. The group is made up entirely of volunteers. Anyone can volunteer, including adults and children. Good wants to point out that if you are under the age of 18 and you wish to volunteer, you must have a parent’s signature and an adult must be present with them at all times during the day.
Good explains that Repair Affair to him means hope.
“Most of the people we assist have lost hope,” he explained. “If you don’t have hope, you don’t have anything.”
He said for many, Repair Affair is their last option for someone to help them.
“We help restore the hope that was once almost lost,” he said. “You would think the ones receiving the help are being the ones blessed and they usually are, but it’s the volunteers that truly get the blessing. We want the elderly and disabled in our community to see that their neighbors do care about them.
“I feel, being a Christian, that one of our largest responsibilities is to help others in need and what better way to do that than in your own community?”
