Pineville board vacancy to be filled

Due to a resignation, the Pineville Independent School Board is looking to fill a vacancy on its board of education.
While not as often highlight by the media, the role of a local school board is vitally important to a community. According to the National School Board Association website, a school board represents the communities voice in education and all it encompasses such as what the schools themselves need and what the community wants. A school board also acts as the public’s “watchdog” that “ensures that taxpayers get the most from their tax dollars.”
An official release by Pineville Independent Schools highlights the guidelines and role a member of the board of education is expected to meet.
The responsibilities of a board member is broken down into four main points:
• Developing policy that governs the operation of schools.
• Provide visionary leaderships and vigorous stewardship that establishes long-range educational plans and programs for the district.
• Hiring the district superintendent and issuing annual evaluation reports.
• Setting local tax rates and ensuring that public funds are spent wisely.
There are multiple requirements that must be met for those interested in serving on the school board. You must be at least 24 years of age, a Kentucky citizen for at least three years, a registered voter in the district, have a high school diploma or GED equivalent, and you cannot, except in a limited capacity, be related to any employees of the school district of provide the district with contract services.
