Pineville extended their current winning streak to two games on Friday. After defeating Leslie County in the season-opener, the Mountain Lions handed Jackson County a 26-16 defeat on the road.

The win continues Pineville’s dominance of the Generals.

Early on, the game was a little bit more competitive than some may have expected. That is due to an extended Jackson County drive that ate up most of the first quarter.

“They had the ball probably the first 13 minutes of the game, so it kind of got us out of rhythm a little bit,” said Pineville coach Bart Elam. “We ended up going into the half 20-8.

“Jackson County, we were impressed. They were a physical team. We knew they were going to be a lot bigger and stronger than us. They beat us at the point of attack a lot of times…and we made some mistakes. We made some mistakes offensively too. We didn’t play great, but sometimes it’s good to win when you don’t play great. We got the win, and at the end of the day that’s what matters.”

Matt Golden ran wild again for the Mountain Lions. The senior tallied 205 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Elam credits much of that success to the offensive line.

“I thought our offensive line did a great job pretty much all night long,” said Elam. “Brendan King was the offensive player of the game. He really mauled people most of the night.”

Pineville didn’t utilize the passing game much with Garland Ellis going 1-for-2 on the night. Reese Capps hauled in the only completion for 26 yards.

Defensively, Lee Cox was named Player of the Game after grabbing eight tackles.

“Lee Cox, our safety, was coming down hill making a lot of tackles all night long,” said Elam. “I was really proud of his effort.”

Capps paced the defense with a team-high 16 tackles. Freshman Hayden Callebs finished with 13 tackles. Along with Cox, Nick Holbrook and Braiden Lingar each finished with eight tackles apiece.

“Our guys played hard. We just had a few mistakes that we didn’t make in the first week,” said Elam. “That’s what’s going to happen when you have a young team, obviously.”

For Jackson County, the Generals tallied 268 yards on the ground. They were led by Dylan Martin, who finished with 102 yards on 19 carries. Isiah Baker tallied 57 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Jaythen Howard ended the night with 51 yards. Shawn Browning added seven points to the scoreboard on the ground.
