University of the Cumberlands men’s soccer team opened the 2018 season with a 1-1 draw against SCAD-Savannah on Saturday night at the SCAD Athletics Complex.
Cumberlands (0-0-1) and SCAD (0-0-1) played a scoreless first half as both teams had chances but were unable to find the back of the net. SCAD held a slight edge in shots (7-6) and shots on goal (4-2), while the Patriots held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Making his first start in a Patriot uniform, Clement May (0-0-1) made four saves in the first half, while Grant Kelly (0-0-1) made two stops for the Bees.
After halftime, forward Marvin van der Made — making his first appearance as a Patriot — scored the Patriots’ first goal of the season in the 48-minute mark. Midfielder Joel Drewery, who led the team in assists in 2017, picked up his first of 2018 on the goal.
However, the Bees would strike back and tie the match at 1-1 when Tom Barry scored in the 52nd minute, assisted by Johan Renli. The two teams traded possession but neither could convert keeping the score tied 1-1 at the end of regulation.
Cumberlands looked to strike in the first overtime as Sergio Infantes put a shot on frame in the 98th minute, but Kelly made the save to keep the game even. That shot turned out to be the lone shot on goal, by either team, in the extra time.
The Patriots outshot the Bees 15-5 in the second half and the two overtime periods combined. May stopped six shots for the Patriots.
Pacing all players with six shots and tying with forward Infantes for a game-best three shots on goal, van der Made had a shot on goal in the 90’ minute and a chance in each overtime period, but the Patriots were unable to score again as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
UC held advantages in shots (21-12), shots on goal (9-7) and corner kicks (9-3) in the match.
The Patriots next face Bethel University in their home opener at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 24 at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex. Live video is available here, while live stats are available here.
