A hot start out of the gate was all Bell County needed when the team hosted Pineville for senior day on Monday. The Bobcats jumped up to a six-run lead in the first en route to a 15-3 victory over the Mountain Lions.

The win ends a two-game skid for Bell that saw the team lose consecutive games to Williamsburg and Garrard County. For Pineville, the loss extends their current slump to four games with only one remaining in the regular season.

“We put it together for once,” said Bell County coach Robbie Landrum. “That’s what we’ve been talking about all year. We’ve played some good ball all year long, but we’ve not finished.

“We need to learn how to win. Have we got better, absolutely. We all know you can’t win ball games if you walk people and if you’ve got errors, and that’s what we’ve been doing. We’ve hit the ball pretty good this year. These guys have got a whole lot better.”

Bell County’s lone senior Jordan Wombles performed about as well as you could on senior day. At the plate, he went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs. He also picked up the win on the mound throwing a complete game while striking out seven batters. He allowed six hits and three runs as well.

“It feels good,” said Wombles after the game. “I thought a lot about this game. I just thought if I come in and complete a game it would feel good to see smiles on (my teammates’) faces.”

Landrum also expressed his pleasure with Wombles’ performance.

“Tonight, I’m very proud of Wombles. It was senior night, and I’m glad he got an opportunity to pitch. He threw great,” said Landrum. “Man, he is hitting the ball hard. Not only in this game. Everybody in the district and 13th Region knows. The guy is batting over .500. The guy is a hitter. He is a good kid.”

While Wombles was putting on a showcase, there were several other Bobcats that also had impressive performances. Jason Jones tallied three runs and two RBIs on three hits, while Antonio Zachery finished with two runs and an RBI on two hits.

DJ Estes led the team in RBIs with five on the evening.

For Pineville, it was Dylan Morris leading the way going 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run. Deon Coffman scored one run on one hit, while Reed Baker scored without an official hit on the day.

Reese Capps was credited with the loss on the mound. Through three innings, the freshman allowed 10 hits and 11 runs with nine being earned. He also struck out four batters and walked five. Coffman closed the game for the Lions.

“Bell hit the ball pretty well today. Honestly, we only had a couple of errors all day long. They just kind of hit it where we weren’t,” said Pineville coach Chris Murphy. “(Bell) ran the bases well. They played good offensively. We couldn’t ever get anything going offensively to nip the chunk away.

“We scored one in the first, one in the second and one in the third. We left probably five or six runners on base. If we could’ve got those in, it could’ve probably been a little different of a game. I give all the credit to Bell. They were ready to play today, and they were hitting the ball well. The were just the better team today.”

The Bobcats took a 7-1 lead in the first to create a six-run deficit. By the time the fourth inning rolled around, Bell held an 11-3 lead.

Bell got things rolling again in the bottom half of the fourth. An RBI double by Wombles increased the Bobcat lead to 12-3. Jones’ two-run triple ballooned the lead to 14-3 before he eventually scored on a sac-fly to increase the margin to 12 runs.

The game ended in the fifth after Pineville failed to score any runs. Coffman was the only player to reach base in the final inning.

Bell County (13-11) returns to action on Tuesday when they host McCreary Central (11-11) at 5:30 p.m.

Pineville (6-18) will travel to McCreary Central at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday for their final game of the regular season.
