Lady Cats defeat Barbourville

For the second straight game in a row, the Bell County softball team scored in double figures when they earned a 10-8 victory over Barbourville on Thursday. After a fast start, the Lady Cats were able to hold off a late surge from the Lady Tigers to claim the win.
Amber Lawson paced the Lady Cats at the plate going 2-for-4 while hitting two doubles and scoring two runs. Sarah Brooks led the team in scoring finishing with three runs. Five other Lady Cats also scored runs during the game including Reagan Robbins, Makaya Baker, Mackenzie Shackleford, Mary-Kate Smith and Makenzie Griffin.
Most of Barbourville’s runs came after the batter reached base on walks. Mary Gray reached base three times on walks and scored two runs. Grace Jones scored two runs as well after reaching base on walks.
Megan Poff was the only batter to score after registering a hit. She finished the night with two runs.
Barbourville jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first with Poff and Jones crossing home plate.
Bell County answered scoring six runs in the bottom half of the inning. After reaching on a single, Robbins scored to cut the lead to one. Lawson, Brooks and Baker each scored runs to give the Lady Cats a 4-2 lead before Autumn Hamilton struck out Shackleford for the second out.
Smith and Griffin each scored before the inning came to an end to give Bell County a 6-2 lead. The Lady Cats scored two more runs in the second to claim an 8-2 lead.
After two silent innings, Barbourville started to make a run during the fifth inning. The Lady Tigers scored three runs to cut the lead to 8-5.
Shackleford increased the lead back to four, 9-5, after scoring a run in the bottom half of the inning.
Barbourville gave one last effort scoring three runs in the sixth to narrow the deficit to one, 9-8. Brooks scored a run for Bell County in the bottom half of the inning to secure the two-run victory.
