For the second time this season, Pineville squared off against Lee, Virginia on Thursday. The game followed a similar script as their previous encounter with the Lady Lions handing the Lady Generals a 51-34 defeat.
The win gives Pineville two victories in the Chain Rock Classic — both coming by double digits.
In a night where Jill Enix’s shot was falling as frequently, Whitney Caldwell picked up the slack. The freshman guard had her normal workload after being restricted the day before. She finished the night with a game-high 20 points while shooting 61 percent from the field and 66 percent from three-point range.
Enix registered a double-double adding 10 points to the scoreboard and hauling in 10 rebounds. Virginia Hall chipped in eight points off the bench, while Makenzie Fuson tallied seven points and eight rebounds.
Alexis Tabor was lights out from three-point range scoring 15 points with each one coming from beyond the arc. Shelbie Fannon added eight points to the final tally.
Lee High grabbed an early 5-2 lead off a Tabor 3-pointer. A 3-pointer by Sarah Combs tied the game at 5-all before a Caldwell jumper gave the Lady Lions their first lead of the game, 7-5, with 53.4 seconds remaining in the first.
Caldwell increased the Pineville lead to 10-5 with a 3-pointer seconds before the buzzer sounded.
The Lady Lions came alive in the second quarter outscoring the Lady Generals 22-6. Pineville opened the quarter on a 9-0 with Caldwell, Brock, Enix and Fuson each finding the bottom of the net to increase the lead to 19-5.
Arielle Tritt stopped the momentum for a moment with a layup that narrowed the deficit to 12 before consecutive baskets by Caldwell and Brock brought the lead to 23-7 with 3:40 remaining in the half.
Shelbie Fannon scored a basket to narrow the margin to 23-9 with just over three minutes to go in the half. Pineville went on a 9-3 run down the stretch with Caldwell hitting a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Lady Lions a 32-11 lead heading into halftime.
Lee High outscored Pineville 23-19 in the second half, but the Lady Lions’ big lead held strong as the exited the floor with a 17-point victory.
