Lady Lions rout Powell, 69-47

After a disappointing showing the last time Pineville took the floor during the J. Frank White Classic, the Lady Lions put on a showcase against Powell County on Wednesday in the opening day of the Chain Rock Classic. Pineville led wire-to-wire in a 69-47 victory over the Lady Pirates.
The Lady Lions scored at least 20 points in the first three quarters before tallying only six in the fourth after the game was already out of reach. The team was only outscored by Powell County in the fourth quarter.
Jill Enix and Raigan King couldn’t be stopped by the Lady Pirate defense. The two players combined for 42 points and 22 rebounds. Enix led the way with a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds. She also tallied six assists and three steals.
King scored 20 points and hauled in an impressive 10 rebounds on the night.
Whitney Caldwell made her return to the court after sitting out multiple games with a leg injury. While on minutes restriction, the freshman guard scored 11 points and garnered two assists. She also had a block and a steal during the game.
Macy Howell led Powell County with 12 points. Emily Branham and Lauren Payne provided eight points apiece off the bench.
Pineville opened the game with a 10-0 run that stretched beyond the midway point of the quarter. Four different players scored during the run with a Caldwell 3-pointer capping the effort.
Howell stopped the run with a basket to cut the deficit to 10-2. After trading baskets, Pineville ended the first with an 8-0 run that gave them a 20-4 lead at the end of one.
The Lady Pirates started finding success in the second quarter adding 19 points before halftime. The Lady Lions answered with 21 points of their own to take a 41-23 lead into halftime.
Powell County continued to search for ways to get back into the game in the third quarter. After starting the half with consecutive baskets, Dakota Brown capped an 8-3 run with a layup to narrow the margin to 44-30.
Pineville responded with a 3-pointer from Caldwell and a layup by Enix to increase the lead to 49-30. Following a Powell County timeout, the Lady Lions went on a 9-0 run that increased the lead to 56-32 with 2:24 remaining in the third.
A 3-pointer by Combs at the end of the period gave Pineville a 63-39 lead. The Lady Pirates outscored the Lady Lions in the fourth, but Pineville walked away with the 22-point victory.

Both teams continue play in the Chain Rock Classic on Thursday. Pineville squares off against Lee, Virginia at 6:30 p.m. Powell County earned a 51-32 victory over Lynn Camp.
