Middlesboro’s early season growing pains continued on Friday in a road trip to Lynn Camp. The Wildcats’ experience took center stage as Lynn Camp jumped out to an early lead and never looked back en route to a 69-36 victory.
The Wildcat defense used their zone to keep the Jackets out of the paint. Middlesboro struggled shooting the ball as well while turning it over multiple times throughout the game.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve got a lot of kids that haven’t played,” said Middlesboro coach Lewis Morris. “The pressure, which wasn’t great, but it was great enough to (make us) turn the ball over 16 times the first half for no reason. There’s just a lot of work to do.”
Jabari Kyle scored a team-high 12 points during the game while shooting 50 percent from the free-throw line. Drake Thomas tallied nine points on the night, and TJ Patterson ended the game with eight points.
The trio of Jacob Bundy, Tanner Boggs and Max Burd were responsible for 50 points. Bundy led the way with a game-high 20 points with 15 coming in the first half. Boggs finished with 16 points. Burd added 14 points to the final tally.
Lynn Camp raced out to a 16-5 lead with 2:25 remaining in the first. A 3-pointer by Bundy and a free throw by Boggs increased the lead to 20-5 with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter.
Thomas cut the lead to 13 with a layup before a Joseph Bevins layup on a fast break gave the Wildcats a 22-7 lead. The Wildcats grabbed a 24-8 lead at the end of the first when Bundy scored on a layup to end the period.
The two teams traded baskets early in the second with free throws from Thomas cutting the lead to 27-14 with 6:04 remaining in the half.
Lynn Camp went on a 10-2 run midway through the second that saw them incease their lead to 37-16 with just over a minute to play in the half. Jacob Belew sparked the run with four straight points before free throws by Kyle narrowed the margin to 31-16.
Baskets by Scott Overbay, Bundy and Boggs gave the Wildcats the 15-point lead. TJ Patterson scored on the putback with 58.6 seconds to narrow the margin to 37-18. A jumper by Bundy gave Lynn Camp a 39-18 lead heading into halftime.
The Wildcats kept the pace up in the second half outscoring Middlesboro 15-6 in the third. Bevins led Lynn Camp in the quarter with six points to help the Wilcats take a 54-24 lead into the fourth.
Boggs’ five points in the fourth quarter helped the Wildcats earn the 33-point victory over the Jackets.
